This is a semi-teardown and photo essay for the Harbor Freight Tools Item 91334 4-outlet power strip with surge surpression. This usually can be found on sale for $3 or less from Harbor Freight Tools if you need a short cable, 4 outlet surge surpressed power strip.

Here we see the device with the good old coupon book.

It says "with Surge Protection." We'll see. The cable is very thick and does qualify for the 14-gauge that it says. It sure is 3-prong. At 14 gauge 15 amperes works fine.

The backside. Not much special here. Except drilling holes and putting in mounting screws would be a bit of a challenge as it's offset...

Yes it says "Surge Protection" and the French "of overvoltage." It has the single "LED" lit switch with integrated circuit breaker.

When you turn it on, you see dual glowing metal electrodes. Wait a minute. LED electrodes don't glow. This is a Neon bulb in there, NOT LED! But Neon bulbs are just as if not more efficient than LEDs and cheaper to boot. My Kill-a-Watt can't detect the neon bulb at all.

Six dual philips/flat blade screws hold the two pieces of plastic together.

Aha! What do we have here... cable straight into the breakerswitch? At least the molded plastic plus the screws hold everything together well. The ground pin even extends through the square holes in the bottom plastic.

Wow, what a crappy solder job on the hot wire?

Traditional cheap mass produced NEMA 5-15 outlets. The line/neutral contacts are probably fine, but the ground contact is crap.

Oh... there's that little MOV and a 'fuse' under the input wire next to the breaker switch. No indications when the MOV gives up its life to protect the circuit and the fuse to prevent it from making the power strip useless when the MOV does its job.

Solder job? No...it's actually WELDED together!

That hot cable is also welded to the terminal. It's not coming off.

Summary: Yes it's cheap. Deceptive advertising, it has a Neon bulb instead of LED indicator. The surge supression MOV is very weak but at least it's there, and no indication when it's consumed. No gas discharge tubes. Short 2ft cable but if all you need is four outlets, that's fine. Good 14-gauge cable.

Well there you have it, item 91334 surge surpressor reviewed.
